Gexcon

By delivering precise simulations and analysis of gas, fire and dust explosions, Gexcon ensures the risk management and the effective measures that minimize the extent of damage and save lives in the event of fires and explosion accidents. Today, Gexcon is a leading software and consultancy firm within advanced simulation and analysis of fire and explosion hazards. The company is present in ten countries, with its largest offices being located in Norway, the UK, the USA, the Netherlands and China.

Gexcon was founded in 1998 by Christian Michelsen Research, a Norwegian state-owned research institute in Bergen. The company is built upon many years of research and development worth more than NOK 750 millions, which has primarily been directed to development of the world-leading 3D and CFD-based simulation software series FLACS.

Gexcon was initially developed to support the emerging oil and gas industry in the 1970s, but today it is increasingly an important part of the shift towards green energy and renewables. This happens in particular by analyzing and reducing risks related to hydrogen production, storage and transport. Hydrogen is recognized as an efficient and environmentally friendly energy carrier, and can contribute significantly to reduce emissions in the energy, heating and transport sectors. The hydrogen market is in an early phase with many new projects, and is expected to grow by 25 percent annually. Today, more than 50 percent of Gexcon’s income is directly related to hydrogen projects.

Longship became the majority owner of Gexcon in 2021. Together with Longship, almost a quarter of the company’s employees have invested in the company.
